Sannakji (Live octopus)
A video of the octopus I took before eating at Gonoe Restaurant in North York.
SENSORY EVALUATION
For this post, I decided to try a new food I’ve never eaten before, Sannakji. Sannakji is a Korean delicacy, it present a live octopus or a dead one while the tentacles are still moving around giving the feeling of a live octopus. I personally did not try the small live octopus because I didn't think I’d be able to go through with that, Instead I had the octopus tentacles. My friends told me the place shipped fresh seafood from Korea, usually Jeju-do, so we decided to try it. When they first placed it on the table it was quite honestly unappealing to me, it didn’t help that my friend addressed its likeness to earthworms. I stared at the dish of moving tentacles for 5 minutes before actually attempting to pick one up, but due to the slimy texture it was quite hard. I’m certain it took me another five minutes just to pick it up with my chopsticks. Out of curiosity I touched it with my finger and the suction cups grasped onto my finger which kind of freaked me out, my friends told me it was quite delicious so I decided for the heck of it, just to get it over with. As I placed the octopus in my mouth, it got stuck to my teeth and my cheek, I wasn’t a fan of the slimy texture either so I just chewed really quickly. It wasn’t as chewy as I thought it’d be, I thought it was rather harder and I personally didn’t like it. The octopus came with some sauces and some vegetable, that are often used for ssam (vegetable wrap) I tried the octopus in the sesame oil and salt and the flavors matched well. My taste palate has always been really strong so I can taste flavors very well. The octopus (although I didn’t enjoy the texture) was very sweet, when it was mixed with the fragrance of the sesame oil and salt it made a good combination. The other sauce was some sort of spicy and sour sauce, I found that it over powered the simple sweetness of the octopus so I liked the other one better. I don’t think I’ll ever eat it again because the texture didn’t sit well with me, but at least I can say that I’ve tried it. Aside from raw octopus, I have had it cooked before, I prefer that over the raw octopus. This experience taught me that raw octopus is not for everyone, and that different flavors work better than some. Of course I knew this before, but sometimes something simple like sesame oil and salt can provide lots of flavors that can enhance the main dish.
