WHITTAMORE'S FARM

The Whittamore family has owned the farm since 1804, originally the produce from the farms were sold door to door from the early 1920’s to 1950’s, as the family grew, so did the farm. They bought more land and grew more crops where they began to wholesale their produce to the local retail markets. Eventually as the farm moved throughout the family, the farm established a pick-your-own operation. Over the years the Whittamore’s farm has expanded beyond strawberries to other crops such as beans, potatoes, pumpkins, and corn.

“Sustainable Agriculture is productive, competitive and efficient while, at the same time, protecting and improving the natural environment and livelihoods of local communities.”

The whittamore’s farm with over six generations of farmers, are dedicated to a environment friendly production of fresh produce for local communities. In addition, opening up their crops gives a chance for families to bond, learn more about different produces, and all while being able to get some healthy choices opposed to produce that are bathed in chemicals and preservatives.

One way they do their part to uphold a enviro friendly farm is through their irrigation system, the intricate design allows the farm to operate without wasting too much water and fertilizer as they only release it via the system. It is because of this that all of their crops are being watered and fertilized properly without randomly spraying water in all directions. It is through this system that they’ve save over 60% of the water they used to waste. Whittamore’s has planted thousands of trees to protect their crops, help the environment, and create new homes insects and other animals.

As we know when growing plants, many insects are attracted to them, of course not all insects are good. While the farm tries to minimize it’s use of pesticides, it cannot be said that they are a pesticide free farm. They try to reduce to use by sending scouts to check their fields at least two times a week. From there on they identify the threats that need to be eliminated and work from their. They have implored the usage of black plastic to protect their crops, and while that helps without using too many pesticides for insects and weeds. In relativity, much of their weeds are eliminated in an old fashioned manner… by hand, more time consuming and higher costs, but definitely more friendly towards the environment. Crop rotations also put a stop to the disease cycles found in crops.

"At Whittamore's sustainable agriculture is not a methodology; it is our way of life."

What I learned? Although there are many things that are common sense, I’ve learned to appreciate farmers more. I was tired after a couple of hours and all I had to show for it was a small bag of potatoes and a bucket of strawberries. The produce I brought home was fresh, I nearly ate it all up in one night. Farmers do this everyday, granted they may have more power, but protecting the crops and worrying about their crops and the environment is certainly a very respectable lifestyle.
